Klaus Thiessen (born July 27, 1927 in Göttingen ) is a German physicist .

Scientific career

Thiessen was born on July 27, 1927 as the son of the physical chemist Peter Adolf Thiessen in Göttingen. His brother is the German chemist Karsten Peter Thiessen . From 1945 to 1950 he worked in Sukhumi as a laboratory assistant at the Institute for Uranium Enrichment, which was headed by Manfred von Ardenne . From 1950 to 1955 he studied physics at the State University in Rostov-on-Don and Moscow State Lomonosov University , where in 1959 he defended his doctoral thesis in the field of semiconductor physics.

From 1958 to 1969 Thiessen worked at the Physikalisch-Technische Institut (Head: Robert Rompe ) of the German Academy of Sciences (DAW) in Berlin. Working for optoelectronics

From 1970 to 1981 Thiessen worked as research director at the optoelectronic plant for television electronics in Berlin. Various types of semiconductor sensors were developed under his leadership, including CCD arrays, light-emitting diodes and displays , laser diodes for fiber optic telecommunications, and LCD components. In particular, technologies for ion implantation for the production of microelectronic components and for organometallic gas phase epitaxy in thin layers were successfully created, which were awarded the GDR National Prize for Science and Technology in 1981 and 1988 .

From 1981 to 1991 he worked as deputy director of the Central Institute for Optics and Spectroscopy (ZOS) of the Academy of Sciences of the GDR , where he was responsible for research on laser diodes for fiber optic telecommunications and the transfer of these technologies to production.

At the same time, he held lectures on optoelectronics at the Technical University of Chemnitz as a professor from 1970 until his retirement in 1992 . From 1995 to 1999 he was a member of the Board of Trustees of the TU Chemnitz. Many of his earlier students are now successful in research and education or in companies in Germany and Europe.

Photovoltaics pioneer

In 1990, Thiessen was a co-founder of the Scientific Society for Applied Optics, Optoelectronics, Quantum Electronics and Spectroscopy (GOS eV), of which he was chairman until 1999.

After his retirement in 1992, an internationally recognized specialist in optoelectronics became a passionate pioneer in the application of solar technologies. Since 1960 he has been engaged in basic research on photovoltaics . Today he works as an international consultant for well-known photovoltaic companies, including at trade fairs and conferences in the USA, Eastern Europe and China.

As part of the WISTAsolar initiative, he has been particularly passionate about developing a photovoltaic park in the WISTA research and technology park in Berlin-Adlershof since 1995 .

In 2001 Thiessen became an honorary member of the Physico-Technical Joffe Institute of the Russian Academy of Sciences in St. Petersburg. For many years he has had a close personal friendship with the former director of the Joffe Institute and Nobel laureate Schores Alfjorow . As an honorary member of Brücke Osteuropa eV, it is particularly committed to promoting cooperation with the countries of Eastern Europe.
