Klaus Weichel

Klaus Weichel (born November 29, 1955 in Kaiserslautern ) is a German politician ( SPD ), an association official and since September 1, 2007 Lord Mayor of the city of Kaiserslautern.

Life

Weichel attended the Pestalozzi elementary school from 1961 to 1966 and then the Hohenstaufen grammar school in Kaiserslautern, where he graduated from high school in 1975. From 1976 to 1982 he completed a degree in biology at the University of Kaiserslautern . In 1987 he was in Zoology with the thesis importance of estrogens and androgens for the singing behavior in youth development at Canary (Serinus canaria) for Dr. rer. nat. PhD .

Weichel was a research assistant and assistant at the University of Kaiserslautern from 1982 to 1987. From 1987 to 1990 he worked as a project manager for the environment in an engineering office in Kaiserslautern. In 1990 he moved to the Kaiserslautern city administration, where he headed the Office for the Environment until 1995. After that, until 1999 he was an alderman of the city administration for the business area environment, health, green spaces, waste management, youth and sport, social affairs. From 2000 to 2007 he was President of the Structure and Approval Directorate South in Neustadt an der Weinstrasse .

Weichel became a member of ÖTV in 1991 . Politically, he was initially a member of the Greens , switched to the SPD in 1992 and turned to local politics . From 1997 to 2002 he was chairman of the SPD city association in Kaiserslautern. In 2002 he became an assessor in the SPD regional association of the Palatinate. Two years later he was elected to the state executive committee of the SPD Rhineland-Palatinate .

In 2007, Weichel ran for the first time in the election for Lord Mayor of Kaiserslautern and was elected in the first ballot with 55.6% of the votes cast. The opposing candidate, predecessor Bernhard J. Deubig ( CDU ), received 40.2% of the votes, while Peter Hahn ( REP ) received only 4.2% of the votes. He was able to defend his position in the mayoral election in 2014 and was confirmed in office in the first ballot with 53.6% of the votes cast. The opposing candidates, lawyer Nico Welsch (CDU) and business administration graduate Achim Oliver Bertram ( FDP ), received 41% and 5.4% of the votes, respectively.

Weichel has also been a member and first deputy chairman of the Palatinate District Association since 2014 .

In addition to his professional and local political activities, Weichel was the main chairman of the Palatinate Forest Association in Neustadt from 2005 to 2018 and is president of the DRK district association Kaiserslautern-Stadt and a founding member of the association ZukunftsRegion Westpfalz. He also works privately and voluntarily in various associations in the Kaiserslautern region.
