The Klausenberg Chapel is a chapel in Koblenz . The 19th-century St. Mary's chapel in the district Ehrenbreitstein and has a plaque for the 1795 fallen here kurtrierischen Lieutenant Baron Arnold brine maker (1766-1795).

history

When exactly the Klausenberg chapel was built in a previous vineyard is not exactly clear. According to one tradition, it was built by a foundation by Martin Haas in 1825, according to another, it was consecrated in 1844.

Before that, there was a small Marien-Kapelle on Klausenberg, near which on October 17, 1795, Lieutenant Baron Arnold von Solemacher and 15 electoral Trier hunters were seriously wounded by the French. He and his raiding party carried out a sortie from the Ehrenbreitstein fortress, which was besieged by the French during the coalition wars , in order to repel enemy troops on the Arzheim Heights. Two days later, the lieutenant died at the age of 29 as a result of his injuries and was buried in the cemetery next to the Holy Cross Church , which was abandoned in 1830.

Lieutenant Colonel Wilhelm von Bötticher, the owner of the neighboring Rheinburg , had a plaque placed on the Klausenberg chapel in 1901 in memory of the 16 soldiers who died in the failure. The Klausenberg chapel became the property of the city of Koblenz in 1937/38. After that, the chapel had to be renovated several times.

construction

The Klausenberg Chapel consists of two small houses that are offset from one another. They have gable roofs with shield gables . The smaller house on the left is crowned with a basalt cross with bent ends and a relief-like crucifix , probably a former grave cross. A simple basalt cross with the inscription AVM - INRI is attached above the arched entrance of the larger house on the right . Below that, above the lintel, a plaque commemorating the dead of the two world wars .

On the side wall of the right house there is a memorial plaque in an aedicular frame. Here it can be read: “ On October 17th, 1795, in a sortie against the French, Lieutenant Baron Arnold v. Solemacher u. 15 Kurtrier hunters killed a hero. "
