Kleanthis Vikelidis ( Greek Κλεάνθης Βικελίδης ; * October 23, 1916 in Thessaloniki ; † November 4, 1988 ibid) was a Greek football player and later coach, who only spent his active career with Aris Thessaloniki and won two championships there. He was also a member of the Greek national team . Because of his physique, he was nicknamed the Macedonian Tank . In connection with his many years of service for Aris, the Kleanthis Vikelidis Stadium was renamed after him in 2004.

Kleanthis Vikelidis was the youngest of three brothers. His two brothers Kostas and Nikiforos were also both active for Aris Thessaloniki , Kostas coached the team from 1933 to 1940 while Kleanthis was still active as a player at the time. His sisters played on Aris's volleyball team. With Aris Thessaloniki, Vikelidis was twice champion as a player in 1931/32 and 1945/46, as well as city champion of Thessaloniki in 1934, 1938, 1946 and 1949. In his entire career he hit the opposing goal 62 times in 121 games , plus ten goals in ten cup games.

National team

Vikelidis made his debut on May 17, 1936 for the Greek national soccer team in Bucharest in a 2-5 defeat against Romania in the Balkan Cup 1936 . After a few more international appearances and goals, he said goodbye to the national team on April 23, 1948 with a 1: 3 defeat against Turkey , where he led the team as captain and scored the only Greek goal of the game. In the period from 1936 to 1948 he completed seven international matches and scored four goals.

Trainer

Kleanthis Vikelidis also remained loyal to his club as a coach and managed the team's fortunes a total of four times (1953–1955, 1957, 1958–1959, 1961). In addition, he briefly coached local rivals PAOK Thessaloniki in 1957 and Apollon Kalamarias in 1961 . As a coach, however, he no longer managed to win the title.

death

Vikelidis died on November 4, 1988 after falling down a staircase in his home in Thessaloniki at the age of 72.
