The small-leaved pipe shrub ( Philadelphus microphyllus ) is a small shrub from the hydrangea family (Hydrangeaceae). Its natural range is in the southwestern United States.

description

The small-leaved whistle shrub is a delicate shrub up to 1.5 meters high with chestnut-brown, flaky bark . Young shoots are initially hairy and later become glabrous and shiny red-brown. The axillary buds are recovered. The leaves are simple, the leaf blade is 1 to 2 centimeters long, ovate-elliptical to oblong-lanceolate, long pointed with a broad wedge-shaped base and entire leaf margin. The upper side of the leaf is glossy dark green, the underside is blue-green and usually hairy.

The flowers are usually single. They are 2 to 2.5 centimeters wide and very fragrant. The calyx is glabrous and has lanceolate sepals. The pure white petals are arranged crosswise, obovate-oblong-egg-shaped with a round and edged tip. The stylus is slightly shorter than the approximately 32 stamens. The species blooms in June.

Distribution and ecology

The natural range is in the US states Colorado , Wyoming , New Mexico , Arizona , California , Nevada and Utah and in Baja California Norte in Mexico. The species grows in steppes and dry forests on moderately dry to fresh, slightly acidic to alkaline, sandy-loamy to loamy, nutrient-rich soils in sunny to light-shady locations. It loves warmth and is usually frost hardy.
