The small-flowered sweet clover ( Melilotus indicus ) is a naturalized neophyte in Central Europe . It belongs to the butterfly family (Faboideae) of the genus Melilotus .
description
The small-flowered sweet clover is an annual , herbaceous plant that develops a branched stem that usually grows 15 to 50 cm high. The leaves are mostly obovate to oblong-wedge-shaped and have six to nine pairs of lateral nerves. The stipules are sub-shaped from a serrated base.
The densely flowered clusters of flowers appear compact and only lengthen at the end. The initially deep yellow crown is about 2 to 3 mm long and fades with age. The wings are shorter than the flag and about as long as the boat. The bald pod is almost spherical and very blunt. It is reticulate, wrinkled and yellow or reddish in color.
The small-flowered sweet clover blooms mainly in the months of June and July.
The number of chromosomes is 2n = 16.
Occurrence and distribution
The species grows on roadsides, in fields, rubble and other ruderal places. It prefers moderately dry, nutrient-rich sandy, loam and clay soils. She is a little bit salt-loving. The home of the small-flowered sweet clover is the Mediterranean area and the Indian suburbs. The species is represented on almost all continents through displacement and naturalization. In Central Europe it thrives in societies of the Agropyro-Rumicion association and also of the Isoeto-Nanojuncetea class. In Germany, Austria and Switzerland, Melilotus indicus is rarely found and mostly inconsistent in the whole area.
