Distribution of the small star umbel ( Astrantia minor )

The small star umbel is a delicate, perennial herbaceous plant that reaches heights of up to 40 centimeters. The stem is bare, branches from the middle and ends in a two- to four-pointed umbel. The basal leaves are long stalked and divided into five to nine columns. The sections are narrowly lanceolate and deeply serrated in the upper part, the 3 middle sections are free to the bottom. The stem leaves are smaller and simpler. The 10 to 20 bracts are pointed and very narrow. They are about as long as the flowers and free at the base. The calyx teeth are spiky and ovoid but blunt.

The flowering period extends from July to August.

The number of chromosomes is 2n = 16.

Occurrence

The small star umbel occurs in the Pyrenees , the southwestern Alps and in the north Apennines . It occurs in Spain, Andorra, France, Switzerland and Italy. It is missing in Germany. It grows on dry, more or less lime-free soils in sparse forests at altitudes of up to about 2700 meters. It particularly likes to grow in the Rhododendron-ferrugineum-Vaccinium scrub, but also in Nardion societies or in societies of the Adenostylion.
