Klickibunti

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Klickibunti is a derogatory German term for (allegedly) exaggerated graphic "gimmicks" in software or especially in web design , through which the actual content to be displayed (especially on websites ) or the (actually as easy as possible) usability of computers is pushed into the background . The term “usability” also means the most intuitive possible navigation within and between websites.

Usage and previous meaning

The designation can be attributed to the internet jargon and slang of computer and web design experts, whereby “experts” can also be ( autodidactically ) well-informed computer users. You can also find the spellings Klicki-Bunti , Klicki-bunti and klickibunti (the latter could be meant as an adjective in contrast to the noun "Klicki ..."). "Klicki" refers to the operation of the computer mouse , "Bunti" actually to any use of colors; The term originally came up when the Windows graphical operating system (like, to a lesser extent, the Apple Macintosh of the 1990s) began to enable myriads of computer laypeople to use computers (for work) after computers had previously been controlled primarily via the console - roughly around 1990. It can thus be interpreted as a rejection of a new technology through which a small section of the population threatened to lose its primacy over the “ mass ” or which feared the “mass abuse” of the new technology.

The two diminutive endings "i" can express the pejorative character of the word, cf. Diminutive # usage . It can be an imitation of Baby Talk , through which "Klickibunti" users are to be put on a par with young children.

The word formation is therefore clearly German and only understandable if you know what German “click” and “colored” mean. The halfway equivalent English name, for example, is formed completely differently: "angry fruit salad". She compares the visual appearance with that of a brightly colored fruit salad .

However, the meaning of the word has shifted so much from the late 1990s that it can no longer be clearly derived from the word formation. This is the subject of the next section.

Meanwhile, even computer experts and die-hard console enthusiasts use graphical web browsers (although you almost always get to see one or the other color ) and other graphical applications that may a. run on the basis of Unixoid operating systems such as Linux ; popular desktop environments here are KDE Plasma and Gnome . "Klickibunti" is no longer used to devalue all graphic user interfaces, but rather serves to differentiate between "sensible" ("pragmatic") and "nonsensical" or "over-the-top" graphic interface design . At times Windows could still be "Klickibunti" in contrast to Linux, but meanwhile certain Linux desktop environments are reviled as "Klickibunti" in contrast to others. The use of the expression becomes more subjective . Eye candy , animation and transparency effects can be negatively conspicuous , the latter, for example, if the legibility of a text is made more difficult by "translucent" other texts or graphics.
