Kloster is one of four districts of the municipality of Insel Hiddensee . It developed on the remains of the Cistercian monastery of St. Nicholas, which existed here from the 13th century . In the 21st century, the monastery with around 300 inhabitants and the other places on the island make up the municipality of Seebad Insel Hiddensee (Hiddensee had around 1000 inhabitants in total in 2017).
history
The monastery was built on a donation of land from Prince Wizlaw II of Rügen. It existed until shortly after the Reformation , after which the monks gradually left the island monastery. The monastery goods were confiscated and the main building of the monastery served as the royal office.
In 1892 the first steamer line started its service between Stralsund and Wiek on Rügen, in summer the steamer also stopped at Kloster and brought the first guests to the place. From the beginning of the 20th century, the small, natural island became a popular summer place of residence, and later also a place of residence, for artists, writers and scientists from Germany. As a result, rich citizens in particular discovered the Baltic Sea as a special holiday destination for themselves. The island of Hiddensee, which can only be reached by ship, remained relatively exclusive and was not "taken over" by technology development, road expansion or building frenzy. The residents decided very early on not to allow individual vehicle traffic here.
Nevertheless, this development led to a significant population growth in the places Kloster and Vitte with the result of new housing developments and the expansion of the port facilities. Traditional economies such as fishing or farming for personal use gradually declined. Tourism became an important branch of the economy, albeit essentially limited to the summer months. The residents worked in the new hotels, in service or rented rooms to vacationers.
After the founding of the GDR and the FDGB , the trade union federation acted as the main lessor of holiday accommodation on Hiddensee. Either the FDGB had soon built its own buildings or the inns and private room rental companies were contractually obliged to only book through the union during the main season. In addition, established himself in the monastery Party -Home home Hiddensee with the former inn to cabin in which only selected members of the Unity Party were allowed to go on vacation. The associated guest room was, however, open to the public; Hotel Hitthim also became exclusive accommodation .
After the fall of the Wall , tourism declined significantly, and many younger Hiddenseers also left their island; however, the residents could now rent to private individuals all year round. The restaurants and hotels, on the other hand, had to invest extensively in order to achieve a minimum standard for tourists. In addition to technical renovations, most of the buildings were also structurally renovated. - In the 21st century, the vacation economy reached a new boom. In a holiday brochure it says: “The place Kloster [...] forms a cultural center of the island. The monastery unites a seaside resort, an artist colony, a farming village and a holiday home. "
