The island church Hiddensee is the last remnant of the former monastery of Cistercian in the village monastery on the island of Hiddensee . The current church building is the second church on this site and was built towards the end of the 17th century on the foundations of the first church.

history

The church was consecrated in 1332 and for centuries served as a parish church for the island's residents. It is slightly raised and is surrounded by the church cemetery . In the 21st century, the Inselkirche is the seat of the Protestant parish of Hiddensee and has been part of the Stralsund Propstei in the Pomeranian Evangelical Church District of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in Northern Germany since 2012 . Before that she belonged to the Stralsund parish of the Pomeranian Evangelical Church . In Hiddenseer community town of Neuendorf one stands parish -House as a branch of the Island Church. It is also equipped with a small organ.

Furnishing

Pulpit altar and baptismal angel

In the church, two models of ships ( votive ships ) hanging from the ceiling stand out, which indicate that in the past it was mainly fisher families who attended church services and prayed for consolation and support.

The belfry was built around 1700 in a pull-forward extension. There is a three-part bell in it . The small bell dates from 1702, the large one was re-cast in 1993. The previous large cast steel bell, cast according to the inscription in 1953, is parked at ground level on the meadow next to the entrance. - The material and the year only allow the conclusion that the earlier bronze bell had to be delivered as a metal donation by the German people during the Second World War . And shortly after the end of the war, a replacement bell made of cheaper material was installed.

The church was rebuilt around 1780. The baroque pulpit altar , the baptismal stand and the baptismal angel came into the church. The barrel vault also dates from this time. Most of the interior design of the church comes from the 20th century. The large painting 'Rescue' on the gallery by Christoph Rosenow, restored in 2005 by Burkhard Kunkel, is remarkable.

The cemetery

In the access area to the church portal, some of the first gravestones from earlier centuries are in a meadow. They are badly weathered and hardly legible. In addition to names, there are also house brands of the deceased on the limestone. Also in the access area is a grave with the following inscription: "Here rest the bones of Pastor Hilde Katharina Maria Rohde, born June 18, 1754 (?), Died December 31, 1808". In the rear of the cemetery are the graves of famous island visitors such as Walter Felsenstein , Gerhart Hauptmann , Gret Palucca , Robert Rompe or Max Kruse , to name just a few. There is also a small cemetery chapel here .
