The Casanova Monastery ( Italian Santa Maria di Casanova ) is a former Cistercian monastery in the Italian region of Abruzzo .

location

Santa Maria di Casanova was near the municipality of Villa Celiera near Civitella Casanova in the province of Pescara .

history

The monastery was founded in 1191 by Countess Margherita and Count Berardo I of Loreto Aprutino and settled in 1195 by a colony of monks from the Tre Fontane monastery near Rome , a subsidiary of the Clairvaux primary abbey . The first abbot was Bartolomeo. Casanova, the foundation was based on three daughter monasteries: Monastery Ripalta di Puglia , Kloster San Pastore and Santo Spirito d'Ocre . Pope Honorius III. suggested in 1218 that the monastery take over the reform of S. Bartolomeo de Sactione, but this was refused. Casanova sent in 1236 at the instigation of Pope Gregory IX. Monks to the pilgrimage site of Santa Maria delle Tremiti. In 1259 the Benedictine Abbey of San Bartolomeo di Carpineto was incorporated. Around 1330 the monastery fell into Kommende and the number of its monks declined. In 1623 it joined the Roman province of the Italian Cistercian Congregation. In 1765 it had to convert to the Calabrian-Lucan congregation. In 1807 the monastery still had four monks. In the same year it was abolished by Joseph Bonaparte and then given to the Carmelites .

Plant and buildings

The complex followed the Fontenay plan, but also took over some of the special features of Casamari Monastery . Today only ruins remain.
