The Holy Guardian Angel Monastery was a monastery of the English Misses in Burghausen in Bavaria in the Diocese of Passau .

History of the monastery

The monastery was founded by the Munich branch of the English Misses in 1683 by the Burghauserin Philippine Baumfelder and five sisters with the permission of the Archbishop of Salzburg . This was followed by the establishment of a convent school and later a boarding school for girls . For this purpose, the house of court attorney Franz Wilhelm Baumfelder (Philippine Baumfelder's brother), who died in 1681, was bought back. In 1731 the dilapidated building was torn down and rebuilt by Johann Martin Pöllner. The consecration took place in 1746. In 1803 the monastery in Burghausen became the central monastery for all other houses of the order in Bavaria. The repeal in the course of secularization did not take place until 1816 and the sisters moved to Altötting . 1826 we took the school system after approval of King Ludwig I , however, again. In 1852 a children's institution was established. The English Misses also worked in elementary schools until 1984.

The Maria Ward Realschule Burghausen is still located in the monastery premises. The monastery itself was closed on May 21, 2018.

High altar of the Guardian Angel Church

The Guardian Angel Church forms the center of the monastery. Above the portal there is a group of guardian angels , which was created by Johann Georg Lindt around 1770 . The stucco of the church ceiling is from the early Rococo and was renovated in 1989. The ceiling paintings are by Innocent Anton Warathi and show the adoration of the kings in the nave and "the nine choirs of angels venerate the Sacred Heart of Jesus" in the choir.

The high altar is based on a design by the Trostberg sculptor Johann Georg Kapfer , who also created the figures of Saints Georg, Maximilian, Theresia and Florian. The altarpiece is by Peter Anton Lorenzonis, the teacher of Johann Nepomuk della Croce .

The side altars show “Anna teaches Maria to read” by Johann Babtist Rabensteiner on the left. In the rococo glass shrine there are relics of St. Martyr Vincentina. On the right is the “Herz Mariae” by Otto Rückert (1949). The accompanying figures around 1760 represent (from left to right) Johann Nepomuk, Franz Xaver, Ignatius and Vinzenz von Paul.

Above the chancel arch that's coat of arms of Baron von Manstorff (d. 1762) depicted that the father of two Superiors and a benefactor was the church.

The Stations of the Cross are from the early 19th century.

In the pre-sacristy there are two parament cabinets from 1690. In the main sacristy there is a cabinet from 1731.
