The Kostanjevica Monastery (Fons Sanctae Mariae, Mariabrunn) - the German name is Kloster Landstrass - is located in Slovenia a little south of the small town Kostanjevica na Krki (Landestrost, Landstraß) on the plain between the Krka River and the Žumberak Mountains . The monastery must not be confused with the Franciscan monastery Kostanjevica near Nova Gorica, which was built in the 17th century . a. the French King Charles X (died 1836) is buried.
history
Kostanjevica Monastery is a subsidiary of the Viktring Monastery in Carinthia , which in turn comes from the filiation of the Morimond Primary Abbey via the Villers-Bettnach Monastery in Lorraine . It was founded in 1234 on the initiative of the Carinthian Duke Bernhard von Spanheim . The monastery was closed in 1785 by Emperor Joseph II. During and after the Second World War, the complex was largely destroyed and from 1956 it was rebuilt. Today it houses the “Forma viva” museum complex.
Buildings and plant
The medieval core from the 13th century with the church and the remains of the cloister to the right of the church is located in the northwest of the extensive complex from the first half of the 18th century. With the exception of the cloister, nothing of the cloister has survived. At the end of the Middle Ages, the church was shortened to three nave bays (originally probably five or seven) and changed to Baroque style in the middle of the 18th century. It has the shape of a Latin cross with three aisles and a transept. The choir and two side chapels on both sides are just closed. The aisles are separated by a pointed arch arcade. All parts of the church are vaulted with ribbed vaults. The capitals have a plant decoration, the church as a whole has a rich sculptural decoration. The style is early Gothic. The baroque furnishings were dispersed after the abolition.
