The Maria Luggau monastery in Maria Luggau in the Lesachtal municipality connects to the Maria Schnee pilgrimage church to the north .

history

In 1591 the Franciscans founded a branch in Maria Luggau. In 1593 the foundation stone for the monastery was laid. As early as 1628 the Franciscans were recalled from Maria Luggau. In 1635 the church, the monastery and the parish were handed over to the Servites . In 1640 a fire destroyed the monastery, the church roof and the top floor of the tower. The monastery was rebuilt between 1640 and 1661. Another fire in 1738 destroyed an extension that had started, the church roof and the bell storey of the tower. The extensive renovation of the monastery was completed in 1741.

description

The monastery is a large three-storey building around a rectangular courtyard. There is a terraced garden on the south side. The main entrance is the western rustikaportal , which is crowned by a coat of arms and two side obelisks.

The sacristy is located north of the church choir and forms the western corner of the south wing. The hollow vault with stitch caps has an oval field with the eye of God in the middle. The stucco fields with tendrils, created around 1740, show a heart with seven swords on the narrow side and above a crown, a pelican and a peacock. The fireplace and the washbasin date from the construction period, the vestry cabinet with inlays from the middle of the 18th century. A carved group of the Lamentation of Christ from the middle of the 18th century is kept in a showcase .

In the middle of the south wing is the refectory with a stucco ceiling from the middle of the 18th century. The furnishings include inlaid benches and tables and a mid-18th century stove. The oil paintings with depictions of eight saints and benefactors of the order are partially embedded in the wall and date from the construction period.

Numerous votive pictures are exhibited in the corridor of the south wing , including a late Baroque peasant picture series on the founding history of the church, full-length portraits of Servites and six rococo pictures on the life story of a Servite named Jakob.

The monastery garden was laid out in the early baroque era. The square, brick garden house on the wall between the first and second terrace with a double staircase and the sparrow temple have been preserved. The sparrow temple, a pavilion in the garden below the retaining wall, is an octagonal building with a wooden lantern from the 17th century. Inside, the niches feature popular baroque stone inlays from 1748 with depictions of the crucified, Mary Magdalene and four monks.

The monastery will be converted into a hotel with 150 beds by the end of 2020; construction is scheduled to start in spring 2019. The reason for this measure is that the monastery is in urgent need of renovation, and from a financial point of view it is not affordable for the order, it is planned that the monastery will be leased long-term to the building company.
