history

West facade

The monastery, possibly built in the 7th century, was attached to the Cistercian order in 1185. It submitted to the Clairvaux Primary Abbey . The foundation is said to have already been made by Alfonso VII and is dated to around 1132. In 1547 it joined the Castilian Cistercian Congregation. The monastery played a role in various actions during the naval war in the 17th and 18th centuries. The secularization of the Mendizábal government brought the monastery to an end in 1836. The church became a parish church and the monastery came into private hands. Portuguese Jesuits used the monastery from 1910 to 1932 . The church was listed as a historical monument in 1931. During the Spanish Civil War , the monastery served as a prison.
