Rheintal Monastery

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Rheintal Monastery was a monastery of the Cistercians from approx. 1245 to 1544 , and from 1486 the Cistercians in Müllheim in Baden-Württemberg .

history

A papal bull from 1245 testifies to a Cistercian convent in today's hamlet of Rheintal between Müllheim-Feldberg and Badenweiler -Lipburg, which was moved to Müllheim around 1260 while retaining the name, but presumably continued to use the Feldberg location "Alt-Rheintal". The Müllheim location dates back to a donation of land by Count Konrad von Freiburg in 1255. The nunnery existed in Müllheim until 1486. Then it was converted into a Cistercian priory , which was subordinate to the Lützel monastery. In 1544 the abbot of Lützel, Niklas Rosenberg, sold the monastery to the Protestant Badenweiler bailiff Ludwig Wolf von Habsperg. In Müllheim only the street name "Klosterrunsstraße" reminds of the former monastery. In the Feldberg district of Müllheim, the former monastery was erected in 1994 in the form of a monastery fountain, and in 1999 a wooden bell tower was added. In 2014, the former location was measured by the monument office using ground penetrating radar .
