Saint-Loup Monastery (Saint-Jean-de-Braye)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The monastery Saint-Loup (Saint-Jean-de-Bray) was 1235-1792 a monastery of Cistercian nuns and / or the Benedictines in Saint-Jean-de-Braye , Loiret , France.

history

Louis the Saint founded the nunnery of Saint-Loup in 1235 on the banks of the Loire in Saint-Loup-lès-Orléans (birthplace of Saint Lupus von Sens , from 1726 part of Saint-Jean-de-Braye, on the eastern city limits of Orléans ). The convent lived according to the Cistercian rule , but at least temporarily refused to recognize the authority of Cîteaux . The monastery was originally a priory , but was elevated to the rank of abbey by Pope Urban VIII in 1639 at the request of Gaston d'Orléans . The first abbess was Marie-Anne de Cochefilet de Vaucelas († 1669), who until then had been the abbess of the Cistercian abbey of Bussières .

From 1726 to 1757 the monastery was in conflict with the bishops of Orléans: Louis-Gaston Fleuriau d'Armenonville (1706–1733), Nicolas Joseph de Pâris (1733–1753, previously already coadjutor , † 1757) and Louis-Joseph de Montmorency -Laval (1753-1757). The Jansenism dispute , which flared up again as a result of the Bull Unigenitus Dei Filius of 1713, prompted the two bishops to refuse to give the monastery any sacraments for thirty years because of suspicion of Jansenism , and this against the will of the king and the parliaments. The abbess Olympe de Châtillon (* 1688; † 1731) and her successor Gabrielle Jubert de Bouville are at the center of the disputes, which are reminiscent of the fate of Port-Royal .

In 1792 the monastery was closed as a result of the French Revolution . Remnants on Rue du Port Saint-Loup in Saint-Jean-de-Braye are now privately owned.
