history
The story goes back to the year 1416. In the files of the monastery it is noted that the farmers had to deliver seven measure of hops per year to the monastery as an interest payment. This is proof that beer was brewed with hops in Neuzelle at this early stage. However, the Neuzeller monks did not receive permission to brew beer commercially until 1589, when Emperor Rudolf II allowed their beer to be sold in the surrounding area. In 1817 the monastery and the brewery were secularized . The brewery burned down in a severe fire in 1892 and was rebuilt in 1902. The monastery brewery was expropriated in 1948 and made public property. In 1968 the company name was changed to the Neuzelle Brewery . After the fall of the Wall , the brewery got its original name back and was privatized again in 1992 as Klosterbrauerei Neuzelle GmbH . In the following time there was a legal dispute about the product "The Black Abbot" because it would not comply with the purity law to add sugar to bottom-fermented beers.
The recipe for the product “The Black Abbot”, which also contains sugar, led to the Brandenburg Beer War , which made this black beer widely known. The legal dispute over the admissibility of the designation beer between the state government of Brandenburg and the brewery was decided after 13 years of legal dispute by a judgment of the Federal Administrative Court in favor of the brewery.
In 1996, together with the Landhotel Kummerower Hof, the "Original Badebier" was created, which is marketed as a wellness beer.
