Knarrevik , also Knarrvika , is a place in the Norwegian municipality of Øygarden in the province of Vestland .

geography

It is located on the east coast of the island of Litlesotra , about eight kilometers west of Bergen . To the east of the village, the Knarreviksund flows into the Byfjord from the south . In the south of the village, the Sotra Bridge leads over the Knarreviksund. The Riksvei 555 runs over the bridge towards Bergen.

A little further west is Straume , where the municipality's administrative headquarters are located. Together with Straume, Knarrevik forms the Tettsted Knarrevik / Straume .

To the west of the location there are several lakes, such as the Vassledvatnet , the Svartavatnet , the Langavatnet , the Lyklavatnet , the Odavatnet and the Storavatnet .

History and Buildings

From 1915 to 1917, the architect Einar Oscar Schou built a large fertilizer factory in the village. The plant, which was shut down again in the 1920s, was later operated as a fish oil factory until 1974. After the construction of the Sotra Bridge, commercial settlements followed, including historical buildings. The talc production plant of Norwegian Talc AS located south of the bridge is striking .

During the Second World War , from 1940 to 1945, there was a German military facility in the place, which controlled ship movements in the Byfjord to and from Bergen. The remains of the facility are under monument protection . Tunnels built for military purposes in the western part of the village also date from the time of the Second World War.

To the east of the town's shoreline are three historic shipwrecks lying under water.

Knarrevik belonged to the municipality of Fjell until it became the present municipality of Øygarden on January 1, 2020 as part of a municipality merger .

There is a primary school in the village with grades one to seven.
