The Sotra Bridge ( Norwegian Sotrabru ) is a suspension bridge built road bridge in the municipalities Øygarden and mountains in the Norwegian Fylke (Province) Vestland .
geography
The bridge spans the Knarreviksund and connects the island of Litlesotra to the west with the town of Bergen to the east. Riksvei 555 runs over the bridge . Immediately west of the bridge is Knarrevik , east of Drotningsvik .
history
Before the bridge was built, there was a ferry connection in this area. The discussion about building a bridge began as early as the 1950s. The areas west of Bergen suffered from migration due to the difficult traffic conditions. In 1965 Sotrabrua AS was founded with its headquarters in the community center of what was then Fjell . Ingvald Ulveseth was the chairman and Mons Lid was his deputy.
The steel bridge was put into operation on December 11, 1971, the official inauguration then on May 25, 1972 by the Norwegian King Olav V. At the time of construction, with its length of 1236 meters, it was considered the longest bridge in Norway and was immediately well received. The usual Christmas shopping in Bergen postponed as people waited for the bridge to open. Initially, a toll was levied for using the bridge . As early as December 1971, a toll of 283,680 Norwegian kroner was collected. In February 1972, twice as many vehicles used the bridge as the ferry in February 1971. The construction cost was 40 million Norwegian crowns. By the end of toll collection in 1983, 23.5 million Norwegian kroner had been collected.
As a result of the bridge construction, the population of the areas west of the bridge increased significantly. In addition, there was an increasing number of businesses.
architecture
The largest span of the 1236 meter long bridge is 461 meters, the other spans twice 150 meters. The passage height is 49 meters, the height of the bridge masts 100 meters. During construction, 51 Siemens lights were used on nine-meter-high steel masts for lighting.
