The company KNAUER Scientific Equipment GmbH is a medium-sized family-owned company , which on October 1, 1962 Herbert Knauer was founded in Berlin. The production and sales spectrum covers all devices for high-performance liquid chromatography including the necessary software . HPLC separation columns for the various analytical and preparative work are also manufactured. Furthermore Osmometer manufactured for applications in chemistry and medicine.

The company exports to over 60 countries with an export quota of approx. 70% via independent dealers. In 2019 the company employed 135 people.

history

While he was still working as a university assistant at the Inorganic Institute of the TU Berlin , Herbert Knauer and his wife Roswitha Knauer founded a company in 1962 to manufacture and sell universal temperature measuring devices. The first device, which at the time was still being developed in the home kitchen, was able to precisely measure temperature changes of 1/1000 ° C. The second device, as an electronic freezing point osmometer / cryoscopy device, was able to determine molar masses up to 3000  g / mol . The successful sale of the devices and the award of a gold medal at the Leipzig trade fair in 1970 finally encouraged the couple to turn to the development of modular devices for HPLC as a further business area and to build their own four-storey production building in Berlin-Zehlendorf in 1974 . In 1986 the internationally recognized, innovative HPLC connection system Dynaseal is developed and the subsidiary company Säulentechnik Dr. Knauer GmbH was founded, which was reintegrated into the parent company in 1995. With the complete range of modular HPLC components, the software products required for them, and an extensive range of HPLC separation columns, the company's sales are growing and more employees can be hired, as OEM customers are now also contributing to the company's further development. In 1997, especially for the purposes of preparative chromatography z. B. for the high-purity extraction of natural substances or drugs , an innovation in the field of simulated moving bed technology ( SMB ) was introduced through the use of a multifunction valve . In 2012, practically all current detectors used in HPLC, including adapted mass spectrometers , will be available from the company.

The daughter of the Knauer couple, Alexandra Knauer, has been working in the company since mid-1994. In 1995 she was appointed managing director of the company and has been the sole owner of the company and the production building since 2000. From 1998 to 2006 she was supported by Bernward Rittgerodt as the second managing director. In 2007, Dr. Alexander Bünz took on the role of second managing director. Alexandra Knauer has been the sole managing director since July 2014. The company has been training apprentices in technical and commercial areas since 1998 . The awarding of several company awards by business associations and the Berlin Senate (see below) to the company marks the appreciation and the good working atmosphere in the company, which is committed to the principles of corporate social responsibility .

In May 2017 the Knauer company signed the Diversity Charter , which ensures diversity in the company.

Products

The company manufactures and sells all components of modular HPLC systems including the required HPLC separation columns, systems for biochromatography , SMB systems and multi -column systems for isolating individual components from complex mixtures, software for controlling all system components, and osmometers . The company also offers OEM production.

Service offers

A maintenance service is offered for all system components sold. In consultation with the device users, the method development for the quantitative analysis of selected substances, including possible sample preparation techniques for complex matrices, is also taken over. In cooperation with schools, the company in the so-called Knauer-Entdecker-Klub KEK offers basic knowledge of HPLC analysis for grades 5, 6 and 7.

The company has been certified according to the quality management standard DIN EN ISO 9001 since 1996 .
