Unterbaar Castle is a three-storey moated castle in Unterbaar , a district of the Baar municipality in the Aichach-Friedberg district . As Hofmarkschloss it was the manor of the Hofmark Unterbaar. The Unterbaar Castle Brewery was founded in 1608 and, according to its own account, is one of the oldest historically documented private breweries in Germany.

history

Unterbaar Castle (1715)

The core of the castle dates back to the 16th century. It was built by Michael Riederer (1473–1520) on a small island. The family sold the castle in 1563. A major renovation was carried out at the beginning of the 18th century by the brothers Franz Marquart and Franz Ludwig Schenk von Castell . Other castle owners included the noble families Moreau and Arco-Zinneberg . In 1916 the Himmelsbach family of wood wholesalers from Freiburg im Breisgau acquired the area, which redesigned the castle (including the facade) in the 1920s. Gustav Einstein from Augsburg bought the castle in 1928 . When he fled from the Nazis, the property passed to Hans Emslander in 1933. After 1945 the castle was used as a retirement home for displaced people from the eastern regions. After a long restitution process, the property was returned to its rightful owner, Gustav Einstein, in 1956. His daughter, Else Spirak (called Sajovic) sold the castle in 1962 to the barons Groß von Trockau , who run the castle brewery but leave the castle empty.

Building description

Two upper floors rise above an ornate basement. In the 17th century the castle was given a baroque style. Four polygonal bay windows round off the corners of the building. The windows are partially surrounded by baroque stucco panels. Shell-shaped decorations are still preserved on some of the windows on the first floor. The original gable roof with the stepped gables was probably converted into a hipped roof about 100 years ago and covered with plain tiles. The box windows were probably also installed at this time. The entrance portal, which is spanned by a segment-arched canopy supported on both sides by decorated double supports, is impressive. Above it is the coat of arms of the Himmelsbach family. It shows a sky with nine stars, supposed to represent the children of the family, and a stream.

The castle is in an extremely deplorable condition. It is surrounded by an impenetrable thicket of bushes and trees. A bridge with a ramshackle iron railing leads over the moat that only exists here to the “enchanted” castle.
