The moated castle Unterwittelsbach in Unterwittelsbach near Aichach in Bavaria , popularly also known as Sisi Castle or simply the castle , is a former hunting lodge of Duke Max in Bavaria . The catholic chapel of St. Ulrich, Afra and Virgin Mary also belongs to the moated castle.

history

The first historical mention of the moated castle dates back to the year 1126. At that time, however, there was another castle at this place. It was owned by the Counts of Sandizell until 1500 , when it became the property of the Lords of Burgau . In 1533 the monastery of St. Ullrich and Afra in Augsburg acquired the property, in 1537 Benedictine monks moved there and had the castle rebuilt to its present form. In 1777 the regional bishop von Reindl bought it . But he sold it back to Elector Karl Theodor in 1781 . His family auctioned it in 1811 to an Arnold von Link, who then sold it to Duke Max in Bavaria in 1838 . The Duke used the building as a hunting lodge and for recreation because it was away from the hustle and bustle of Bavarian state affairs.

The Duke called the castle "his castle", probably also because of the proximity to the ancestral castle of the Wittelbachers, Wittelsbach Castle in Oberwittelsbach . The castle became famous for being one of the daughters of Duke Elisabeth of Austria-Hungary , who enjoyed international popularity thanks to the Sissi films .

The castle remained in family ownership until 1955, but from 1940 it was used as an emergency shelter for refugees and displaced persons . In 1955 the Prince zu Fürstenberg bought it as a residence for his newly married daughter. In 1972 it was bought by a family from Munich and sold on in 1977.

From 1977 to 1999 the castle served as the main building of a facility for educational assistance for young people. In 1999 the city of Aichach acquired it and after restoration made it accessible to the public again; Now it houses a Sisi Museum , which shows a special exhibition every year.
