Wall system Zahling

The early or high medieval wall system Zahling is located about 600 meters southeast of the parish church of the Obergriesbach district of Zahling on the edge of a new building area in the district of Aichach-Friedberg ( Swabia ).

description

To the southeast of Zahling, some terraces and hill spurs jump out of the northern slope of the valley. The most striking protrusion is completely wooded. The slopes seem to have been artificially divided. The oval plateau of the elevation measuring around 70 by 50 meters at the foot of the hill is almost flat. A narrow berm runs around the hill - it sinks to the south and can also go back to a path that was created later. The north side is raised against the valley slope by about one meter. A previously existing ditch was completely filled in.

Time and purpose

The time of the small weir is unclear. The place Zahling is likely to have been created in the 7th or 8th century AD. It could be both an early medieval village defense castle from the time of the Hungarian invasions, as well as a high medieval residence. The local tradition, however, relocates the castle of the local aristocracy to the "Mezgerholz" west of the village (saga of the Tannenbrünnerl). Construction material is said to have been removed from here in the 19th century.

The Bavarian State Office for Monument Preservation lists the monument as a rampart from prehistoric times under the monument number D-7-7532-0037.

A similar weir system is only about 1300 meters southwest on the edge of the Taitinger wood in the area ( section fortification in the Taitinger wood ). Here you can still see a 1.5 meter high section wall with a ditch.
