Section fixing in Taitinger wood

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The section fortification in Taitinger Holz is about 600 meters northwest of the St. Lorenz Chapel of Latzenhausen on a hill in the Aichach-Friedberg district in Swabia ( Obergriesbach municipality, Zahling district ).

description

The small fortification was fortifikatorisch created sent on an elongated, salient westward outcrop. The steep to moderately steep (north side) slopes protect the fortification on three sides. Towards the eastern hinterland, the high plateau narrows to around 20 meters. Here an approximately 25 meters long and up to 1.5 meters high angular moat secures the castle square against the hinterland. The bottom ditch presented is about two to three meters wide and up to half a meter deep. In the south, the rampart ends in a stepped terrain. To the west, the moat merges with the steep slope after about 10 meters. The oval castle plateau (approx. 60 × 20 meters) is approximately 20 to 25 meters above the valley floor and slopes down to the west. Apart from the eastern rampart, no other earthworks and slope ditches can be identified.

Time and purpose

Until a professional archaeological investigation has been carried out, no reliable statements can be made about the timing and purpose of the section fortification. The slopes were probably only secured by palisades or wattle fences. The volatile structure and the hidden location in the area speak for a temporarily used, perhaps unfinished protective castle. It is possible that a prehistoric or early historical fortification was used here until the time of the Hungarian invasions (10th century AD). Another similar terrain spur jumps from the edge of the slope about 1,300 meters to the northwest near Zahling. This hill also seems to have once supported a fortification.

The Bavarian State Office for Monument Preservation lists the section fortification in Taitinger Holz as a section fortification of an unknown period under the monument number D 7-7532-0038.
