Section fortification Schorn

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Schorn section fortification is located about 1700 meters northwest of the Pöttmes district of Schorn ( Aichach-Friedberg district , Swabia ) on a wooded hill. The well-preserved ground monument could go back to one of the numerous early medieval Hungarian fortifications in this region.

description

The western wall to the south
The rampart from the castle plateau
Difficult to follow in the thick undergrowth: the unfinished or older east wall (west side)

About 1700 meters northwest of Schorn, an approximately 450 meter long terrain spur (about 500 m above sea level) jumps out of the ridge. At the beginning of the tongue of the land, a section wall up to five meters high with a ditch secures the Burgplatz. The approximately 120 meter long rampart runs in the north-west in an arc to the east to the slope edge. Inward, the earthworks tower over the site by around two meters. On the other sides, very steep slopes protect the plateau, which here was probably only reinforced by palisades or fences. The fortification is approximately 80 to 100 meters above the valley.

Another moat can be traced in the undergrowth about 80 meters east of the plywood. This earthwork is only about three meters high measured from the bottom of the trench. The southern part runs only as a shallow, approximately half a meter deep hollow to the slope edge. It is likely to be either an older line of fortifications or the unfinished main wall of an early medieval castle complex.

Typological classification

Until a professional archaeological investigation of the site has been carried out, one can only speculate about the time and purpose of the castle complex. From the outward appearance it is likely to be one of the numerous smaller Hungarian fortifications in this area, the expansion of which may have been stopped abruptly after the battle on the Lechfeld . In addition to the typical layout of the rampart and its very good preservation, the obviously unfinished main rampart, which could also be a remnant of an older castle complex, speaks for this. One of the most impressive Hungarian castles in the area of the Augsburg bishopric ( Schanze Wagesenberg ) is only about 3800 meters southwest in the Ebenrieder Forest .

Early medieval castles were often created through the expansion of much older fortifications or settlement areas.

The Bavarian State Office for Monument Preservation lists the ground monument as a section fortification of prehistoric times under the monument number D-7-7332-0002.
