Neil Kilkenny (born December 19, 1985 in Enfield , London ) is an English- born Australian football player .
Club career
Kilkenny was born in Enfield but grew up in Brisbane, Australia . In 2002, after his family had moved back to England, he signed a two-year training contract with Arsenal FC before moving to Birmingham City in January 2004 . There he could not prevail in the professional team and was loaned to Oldham Athletic in November 2004 for the rest of the season, where he was able to secure a regular place. After returning to Birmingham, he was able to establish himself in the professional team and came September 24, 2005 to his league debut in the Premier League . He started against Liverpool but saw the red card after 84 minutes when he blocked a ball with his hand on the goal line. The due penalty was converted to 2-2 final score. In the following years he mostly came on as a substitute.
After relegation in the 2005/06 season, the situation of Kilkenny did not improve, even in the second division he was only a supplementary player at Birmingham City. When the club succeeded in direct promotion back to the Premier League, Kilkenny was awarded again at the start of the season in August 2007 for six months to Oldham Athletic. Returning to Birmingham in early January, he was immediately loaned out to Leeds United for a third round match in the 2007-08 FA Cup . Leeds won the cup game 3-0 and Kilkenny was named Man of the Match for his performance. Shortly thereafter, he signed a contract until 2011 for a transfer fee of £ 150,000.
On June 24, 2011 Kilkenny moved to Bristol City and signed a three-year contract.
National team
Born in England, Kilkenny moved his family to Brisbane, Australia at a young age. He was eligible to play for the English as well as the Australian and Irish national teams, but decided shortly before the 2006 World Cup for the Australian national team and made his international debut in a World Cup preparatory match against Liechtenstein. Kilkenny was not nominated for the World Cup itself. With the Australian Olympic selection (U-23) Kilkenny qualified for the 2008 Olympic tournament in China and was appointed to the 18-man squad in July 2008 by trainer Graham Arnold .
After another international match in June 2008 in a 1-0 defeat in the World Cup qualifying against China , there was only sporadic contact with national coach Pim Verbeek . Those in charge observed Kilkenny in January 2010 in the sensational third round victory of Leeds in the FA Cup against Manchester United , but it was not enough for a renewed invitation to the national team.
After the 2010 World Cup , Holger Osieck took over Verbeek as the Australian national coach and Kilkenny found himself on a provisional 50-player list for the 2011 Asian Cup in December 2010 . Osieck finally called Kilkenny into the 23-man squad and used him as a substitute in four tournament games by substitution, including in the 0-1 defeat in the final against Japan .
