history

The building was developed by Crozier Associates, Clough Harbor & Associates and Beltrone / MLB at a cost of 68.8 million US dollars executed. The arena contains, among other things, 25 luxurious boxes, each with 16 seats, cable TV, bathroom and refrigerator, which are located at the top of the inner shell. The boxes are rented for three years. The arena was opened on January 30, 1990 as Knickerbocker Arena with a concert by Frank Sinatra .

The arena naming rights were sold to PepsiCo in 1997; therefore the arena was known as the Pepsi Arena until 2006 . In May 2006, the naming rights were sold to the Times Union , a regional newspaper, and therefore the name of the arena has been Times Union Center since January 1, 2007. The building is managed by the operator of event buildings, SMG .

The arena's users include the Siena College men's basketball team, the Albany Devils (until 2017) of the American Hockey League and the Albany Firebirds of the Arena Football League 2 (af2) , but not, as the earlier name suggests, the New York Knicks who call Madison Square Garden their home.

The Times Union Center hosts the ECAC Hockey Championships each year and often hosts the annual Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference basketball tournament (1990–1996, 1998, 2000, 2002, 2004, 2006, and 2008–2010).

Since opening with Frank Sinatra, the Times Union Center has also been a popular venue for concerts and shows due to its proximity to major cities like New York , Boston, and Montreal .

The World Wrestling Entertainment has used the arena often. From 1990 to 1998 189,833 WWF fans walked through the entrances of the Times Union Center. Three Superstars won their first WWE Championship in this arena. In 2000, the Pepsi Arena hosted the World Wrestling Federation's No Mercy. Notable was Steve Austin's return to active competition after being injured by rikishi .
