Knut-Olaf Haustein

Knut-Olaf Haustein (born September 20, 1934 in Dresden ; † February 9, 2006 ) was a German clinical pharmacologist , university professor and founder of the Institute for Nicotine Research and Smoking Cessation in Erfurt .

Career

After graduating from high school in 1952, Haustein studied medicine at the University of Leipzig until 1957 . He received his doctorate there in 1957 . In 1967 he was at the Medical Academy Erfurt habilitation . Hausein became full professor and head of the department for clinical pharmacology in Erfurt in 1978. From 1984 to 1993 - the year the facility closed - he was director of the institute for clinical pharmacology. In 1994 he went to the University of Jena , where he became full professor for clinical pharmacology. He was visiting professor for clinical pharmacology from 1995 to 1997 at the University of Erlangen-Nuremberg .

Haustein was a member of the drug commission of the German medical profession . For several years he was a board member of this commission. In addition, he headed the Medical Committee for Drugs Safety at the Federal Institute for Drugs and Medical Devices (BfArM) for several years .

In 2005, Haustein collected almost 30,000 signatures for a comprehensive smoking ban in Thuringian schools.

Research areas

Haitein worked in the field of digitalis glycosides , orally available anticoagulants ( e.g. phenprocoumon ) and vitamin K antagonism . Other focal points were the 14 C- aminopyrine breath test and microcirculation studies with various active ingredients. He was particularly committed to nicotine , smoking cessation and the fight against tobacco abuse.

In 1999, Haustein founded the Institute for Nicotine Research and Smoking Cessation in Erfurt. In 2004 he received the Dr. Ludwig Pfeiffer Medal of the State Medical Association of Thuringia . In 2003 he was honored with the Ernst von Bergmann plaque .

Personal

From 1967, Haustein was married to Heidi, a doctor. Hausein had two children with her.
