Knut Hesterberg (* 1941 in Lörrach ; † 2016 ) was a German sculptor and furniture designer .

Life

Knut Hesterberg grew up as the son of the foundry master Werner Hesterberg in Maulburg . After graduating from high school, he did an apprenticeship in his parents' metal foundry and then attended the Basel School of Applied Arts . He was a student of the architect and artist Max Bill ; from 1965 he was a student and collaborator of the sculptor Mary Vieira (São Paulo). Both had a pioneering influence on his artistic work. Two years later he founded the studio for free and applied form in Maulburg. His numerous exhibitions took him to Basel , Munich and Milan, among others . In 1984 the artist moved to Provence .

His constructivist sculptures stand or stood in public buildings and on squares in Lörrach, Schopfheim, Steinen and Maulburg. His furniture design for sculptural coffee tables (often made of steel, aluminum and glass) and armchairs in the style of mid-century modern was licensed from well-known manufacturers, in particular from Ronald Schmitt (Eberbach) and, to a lesser extent, from Bacher Tische (Renningen near Stuttgart) .

The artist realized his intuitive ideas in plastic representations, in compact bodies or also in rhythmically rotating surfaces. In many of his works, Hesterberg saw the statics as a “moment phase of dynamics”. He wanted change to be understood as a “function of duration”; “As long as something is moving, it continues and continues to exist, an 'additive development'”. Hesterberg wanted to express "extreme, structural simplicity" in his works. From the viewer he expected “not mere amazement, but conscious observation and thus recognition”.

reception

The magazine Der Literat wrote in 1977: “The sculptures by Knut Hesterberg [...] captivate with their precise aesthetics. The beauty of movement, harmony inside and out are ideally matched to the cool appearance of the aluminum used. The works remain silent symbols of a timeless state. "
