Johnsgaard started in Vernon for the first time in December 2009 in the Nor Am Cup and finished 66th in the 15 km freestyle. He ran his first World Cup race at the beginning of the 2012/13 season in Canmore and finished 56th in the skiathlon . His best placings at the Nordic Junior World Ski Championships 2012 in Erzurum were 49th place in the skiathlon and tenth place with the relay. In April 2013 he came on the podium for the first time in the Continental Cup at the US Super Tour in Truckee with second place over 3.1 km freestyle. At the U23 World Ski Championships in 2014 in Fiemme Valley , he achieved 42nd place in the sprint and 21st place over 15 km classic. In March 2014 he finished third in the 10 km classic and second in the sprint at the Canadian Championships in Corner Brook . At the U23 World Ski Championships in 2015 in Almaty , he finished 47th in the 15 km freestyle, 32nd place in the skiathlon and 14th place in the sprint. In the 2015/16 season he came in second place three times and third three times in the Nor Am Cup, thus reaching third place in the overall standings. At the beginning of March 2016 he got his first World Cup point in the Ski Tour Canada , which he ended prematurely, with 30th place in Gatineau in the first sprint stage. After finishing 72nd in the World Cup mini tour in Lillehammer at the beginning of the 2016/17 season, he achieved his first podium finish in the World Cup with third place in the relay in Ulricehamn . At the Nordic World Ski Championships in Lahti in 2017 , he finished 56th over 15 km classic, 55th place in 50 km mass start race and in skiathlon and 53rd place in sprint. At the end of the season he finished 53rd in the World Cup final in Québec . In the 2017/18 season he finished 81st in the Ruka Triple and won his first Nor Am Cup win in the Mont Sainte-Anne skiathlon . At the 2018 Winter Olympics in Pyeongchang , he ran to 69th place over 15 km freestyle and ninth place with the relay.
