Jacobus "Ko" Doncker (born April 6, 1874 in Haarlem ; † April 7, 1917 there ) was a Dutch draftsman, shadow play artist and author.

Life

Ko Doncker was the son of a baker for rye bread . Contrary to his father's wishes, he did not take over the family business in Haarlem because he had artistic ambitions. From 1888 to 1893 he attended the School voor Kunstnijverheid in his hometown . After graduating from school, he explored Europe by bike, lived for some time in Paris and London and made a living as a wallpaper designer , set designer and cartoonist . In Belgium he designed decorations for the Brussels World's Fair in 1897 . From 1900 he brought several books with the title De Avonturen van Dr. Mole out.

After his father's death in 1906, Doncker returned to Haarlem and took care of the bakery; in a back room he always kept his painting and drawing utensils ready. He traveled again, but eventually settled in Haarlem and lived the life of a hermit there . He worked as a cartoonist for Groene Amsterdammer , Haarlems Dagblad and the satirical weekly De Ware Jacob . His greatest passions, however, were paper cutting and shadow play, which made him nationally known. He also introduced Limerick in the Netherlands in 1911 .

Other sources of income for Doncker were drawings for advertising purposes. He developed several comic strips : for Verwegen & Kok, a suitcase manufacturer from Amsterdam , he created Het avontuur van Mr Haverstock , drew advertising for the genever brand Oude Boll , for a flower shop he created advertising in silhouette form and the advertising character Piet Pelle for the bicycle manufacturer Gazelle . For the cigar manufacturer Salm he designed belly bands with the figure Jan van der Plas , on which a warning was given not to start smoking too early. After a few years he stopped working in advertising and devoted himself entirely to shadow play. He created entire pieces, which he also set to music.

On April 7, 1917, Ko Doncker, who suffered from kidney disease, was riding a bicycle when he passed out and fell off his bike. He died of a heart attack on the way to the hospital at the age of 42.

In an obituary, the magazine Elsevier's Geïllustreerd Maandschrift wrote that Doncker had a sense of humor like Wilhelm Busch . She described the deceased as a simple, childlike and nature-loving man: Nobody was less vain than he was.
