Cobra and the Lotus -

Kobra and the Lotus is the second studio album by the Canadian heavy metal band Kobra and the Lotus , released in 2012 .

Emergence

The band originally recorded the album between February and April 2011 with music producer Julius Butty and then traveled to Europe for a tour of the UK . The group's manager, Susan Bullen, had made contact with various record companies and played demos of some of the pre-produced songs to a manager of the Universal Music Group , Mark Spicoluk . Spicoluk assumed that Gene Simmons might be interested in signing the group for his label Simmons Records , and recommended the band to him. During the week, Simmons reached out to cops and made it clear that he was interested in a signing.

After signing, the band returned to the studio in January and February 2012 to record four additional tracks under the guidance of Kevin Churko. Churko also revised the previously recorded titles.

The titles Welcome to my Funeral, Forever One and 50 Shades of Evil were released as singles . Video clips were also produced for all three songs .

reception

Andreas Himmelstein from the German magazine Rock Hard wrote about the album that the Canadians “have what it takes to be among the really good female fronted metal bands.” Singer Kobra Paige “thanks to her vocal training has a lot of taste in her vocal cords, "And the instrumental faction keep suggesting that they" listened pretty well to "the eighties metal acts in general and US representatives of the scene like Chastain , Vicious Rumors or Iced Earth in particular". However, the “completely over-ambitious artificial plastic sound trimmed to the times would almost completely kill the original metal spirit”, and with the harmonies and arrangements there is “always too much kitsch and pathos,” which you primarily notice with “female vocals Bands like (early) Evanescence or Lacuna Coil ”connect. Himmelstein calls the album “the bottom line is just about okay” and thus pretty close to “doesn't need a pig!”.

Metal Hammer wrote that it was "to be welcomed that more and more women have been getting behind the microphones recently". This applies “especially in the case of the Canadian newcomers Kobra And The Lotus,” because there is “the full Power Metal broadside with simple sing-along choruses and double leads without any trend-conscious Eso rituals or symphonic wallpaper paste.” The origins of the sound lie "Clearly between Maiden and Priest ", but "the songs have a much more modern touch." The focus of the album is singer Brittany "Kobra" Paige, whose "strong voice in the mix unfortunately came a little too far into the foreground". This leaves the rest of the band pale, but does the assigned tasks “inconspicuously and solidly.” Despite “compromises in production”, thanks to songs like the first single Welcome To My Funeral , the group can run open doors to “friends of classic Iced Earth sounds .
