Koen Lenaerts , actually Koenraad, (born December 20, 1954 in Mortsel ) is a Belgian legal scholar , professor of European law at the Katholieke Universiteit Leuven and President of the European Court of Justice .

Career

Lenaerts studied law at the Universities of Namur and Leuven, graduating with honors. In 1978 he completed a Master of Laws (LL.M.) at Harvard University , where he graduated a year later with a Master of Public Administration (MPA). He then began to work as a research assistant at the Katholieke Universiteit Leuven , where he received his doctorate in 1982 with a comparative thesis on constitutional precedents of the European Court of Justice and the Supreme Court of the United States .

Since 1983 Lenaerts has been Professor of European Law at the Katholieke Universiteit Leuven and Director of the Institute for European Law there. He is also the co-editor of numerous legal journals, such as Europarecht , the European Law Review , the Cahiers de Droit européen and the European Constitutional Law Review . In addition, he was a professor at the College of Europe in Bruges from 1984 to 1989 and a visiting professor at Harvard University from 1988 to 1989 .

Lenaerts began his work at the European Court of Justice in 1984 as a trainee lawyer with Judge René Joliet . From 1986 he was a lawyer at the European Court of Justice on behalf of Belgium . From 1989 to 2003 he was a judge at the European Court of First Instance . In 2003 he was elected judge at the European Court of Justice, and he was vice-president from 2012 to 2015. He has been President of the ECJ since October 8, 2015. His current second term of office runs until October 6, 2021. In 1988 he was elected a member of the Academia Europaea .

Personal

Lenaerts is married and has six daughters. He is linguistically gifted, so he can speak Flemish , French , English , Spanish and German fluently. He is considered a “staunch European” and a “staunch advocate of the rule of law ”.
