Location of the Kokschenga (English Kokshenga) in the catchment area of the Northern Dvina |
The Kokschenga ( Russian Кокшеньга, Кокшенга ) is a left tributary of the Ustja in the Arkhangelsk Oblast and the Vologda Oblast in northwestern Russia .
The Kokschenga arises at the confluence of the Ilesa and Kortjuga rivers . It flows first in a southerly, then southwestern direction through the Vologda Oblast. However, it later turns to the northeast and flows into the Arkhangelsk Oblast, where it meets the Ustya after 251 km. The Kokschenga has a catchment area of 5670 km². Its main tributaries are the Uftjuga from the left and the Pechenga from the right. Between November and April the Kokschenga is covered by a layer of ice. The subsequent spring flood during the snowmelt between April and June contributes significantly to the annual runoff. At the Moiseevskaya gauge , 106 km above the estuary, the mean discharge is 35.5 m³ / s.
