The Staufer Friends Committee was founded on June 1st, 2002 and set itself the task of erecting Staufer steles “at Europe's most outstanding Staufer sites” in memory of the Staufer people. The Hohenstaufen were Roman-German kings and emperors in the High Middle Ages .

The monuments are works by the Stuttgart sculptor Markus Wolf . Donors took over the financing of the steles . The committee ceased its activities at the end of 2018. By this time, thirty-eight Staufer steles had been built in six European countries.
