The command of the fleet base was a higher command authority of the Federal Navy , which existed from May 2, 1956 to September 30, 1965. It was initially based in Sengwarden near Wilhelmshaven and moved to Wilhelmshaven- Rüstersiel in 1962 . In the course of a reorganization of the Navy on October 1, 1965, the tasks of the command of the fleet base and the central naval command were merged in the newly established Naval Office .

tasks

The command of the fleet base led the logistical support organization of the German Navy and was responsible for other port and coastal tasks. He was subordinate to bases, auxiliary ships and other supply facilities. In addition, the command was temporarily responsible for central tasks in the Navy, some of which were transferred to other command authorities after a short time.

organization

The command of the fleet base was under the command of the Navy in the Federal Ministry of Defense . The direct superior of the commander of the command was the inspector of the navy .

Rod

The staff of the command possessed not only the general staff departments for several special staff departments for central naval tasks. This included the special department STAN (strength and equipment verification) set up on June 6, 1959 , which controlled the personnel and material equipment of the navy. This task changed in November 1960 to command of naval training . Also on June 6, 1959, the special printing regulations department was set up. She was placed under the Central Naval Command on February 1, 1962 as the successor to the Naval Training Command. In the third quarter of 1959, the special marine medical department was finally integrated into the staff of the fleet base. All three tasks had been taken over from the former Central Naval Service , which was dissolved on March 31, 1959.

The naval liaison to the Federal Ministry of Transport , Maritime Transport Department , formed an independent element below the staff .

Naval Section Commands

The command was subordinated to the North Sea and Baltic Sea Section Commands , which in turn were subordinate to the naval bases, air bases, coastal telecommunication and location centers, supply points, music corps and initially the naval arsenals . The base commandos of the coast guard, harbor protection and inland minesweeping squadrons were provided for coastal protection. However, these were not all set up as planned.

Floating supply

The first larger supply ships that the Navy procured were placed directly under the command of the naval base. From 1960 they were combined in the command of the supply ships , which was subordinate to the command of the fleet base as a type command.
