The local elections in Leichlingen (Rhineland) take place every five years. The district city of Leichlingen (Rhineland) is part of the Rheinisch-Bergisch district . The city council has 32 seats.

In the local elections in 2004 , the SPD became the strongest parliamentary group. Ernst Müller (SPD) became mayor with 58.1% of the valid votes.
In the local elections in 2009 , the SPD became the strongest parliamentary group in the council. Müller remained in office as mayor.
In the 2014 municipal elections , the SPD, the FDP, Die Linke , the Witzhelden / Leichlingen Citizens List and the UWG / Free Voters will be running again. Six candidates are applying for the position of mayor. Among them is the CDU district council member Michael Strieker, who is running as an independent candidate.
