The Konrad Lorenz Institute for Evolution and Cognitive Research (KLI) is an Austrian research institute that deals with questions of theoretical biology . It promotes the articulation, analysis and integration of biological theories and the exploration of their scientific and cultural significance. It was located in Altenberg until 2013 and was located in the villa that Konrad Lorenz's father had built there. Today it is located in Klosterneuburg , near Vienna, in the listed former Kremsmünsterhof.

The institute was founded in 1990 from private funds and receives additional support from the Province of Lower Austria . The institute, initially headed by Rupert Riedl , has been headed by Gerd B. Müller since 1998 .

It also maintains close relationships with institutes of higher education in Vienna and Lower Austria, as well as with international institutes with similar research goals. The institute offers a stimulating and creative environment for fellows, scientists and students interested in studying topics in theoretical biology . In addition, the KLI's lectures and seminars provide a platform for the critical discussion of current topics in the life sciences.

activities

The KLI supports theoretical research in the areas of evolutionary developmental biology and evolutionary cognitive research . This is made possible by making fellowships available to graduates, postdocs and scientists. In addition, the KLI organizes lectures, symposia and workshops, houses the Konrad Lorenz Archive and offers an extensive database on theoretical biology and other related fields. The journal Biological Theory is published together with Springer Science + Business Media .

Fellows

Fellows are scientists and students who can work on their own projects at the institute. Research projects in the areas of evolutionary developmental biology and evolutionary cognitive research are primarily supported. The KLI is also open to other related and interdisciplinary research fields. Former and current fellows come from different nations and have been trained in various disciplines within the social and natural sciences.

KLI Colloquia

The KLI Colloquia replace the previously held Brown Bag discussions . These are informal roundtables and specialist discussions that present current research related to the goals of the institute.

Symposia

The symposia are dedicated to current topics in theoretical biology that are of scientific and philosophical importance. They consist of lectures at the University of Vienna and subsequent discussions at the KLI. These events are open to the general public.

Workshops

The institute also hosts the Altenberg workshops in Theoretical Biology . These meetings are focused on core topics of biology, perception and behavior. All workshops are organized by leading experts in the respective subject areas. The events are fully sponsored by the KLI; They have produced numerous books, the content of which consists of explanations of new ideas and concepts that were developed during the workshop.

The KLI aims to generate conceptual progress and research initiatives in the life sciences. The expertise of the selected editors and authors guarantees the high quality of the publications.
