Konrad Nägeli (born January 17, 1881 in Rapperswil ; † October 1, 1951 in St. Gallen , reformed , resident in Rapperswil) was a Swiss politician (FDP) .

biography

Konrad Nägeli was born on January 17, 1881 in Rapperswil as the son of the hat maker Konrad Josef Nägeli and Laura née Helbling. He attended high school in Winterthur and graduated from high school in 1899 . During his school days he joined the Vitodurania middle school association . Konrad Nägeli then began studying law at Bern University , which he completed with a doctorate .

Subsequently, he was employed as secretary of the cantonal building department of St. Gallen and as editor of the St. Galler Tagblatt . In 1906 Konrad Nägeli married Leonie, the daughter of the engineer Georg Franziscus. He died on October 1, 1951 at the age of 70 in St. Gallen.

Political career

Konrad Nägeli, a member of the Free Democratic Party, was initially represented in the St. Gallen municipal council between 1909 and 1918 . He was also elected to the city ​​council in 1911 , where he initially headed the building construction and health services department until 1918, then the building management department until 1930, and from 1924 the school administration department. Subsequently, he served as mayor of the city until 1948 alongside the management of the Interior and Finance Directorate . He also represented his party at the cantonal level between 1930 and 1936 in the St. Gallen Cantonal Council . He also served as President of the Swiss Association of Cities from 1937 to 1948 .

Konrad Nägeli played a key role in the expansion of the commercial college , in the establishment of the Federal Materials Testing Institute in St. Gallen and in the establishment of the Eastern Switzerland Agricultural and Dairy Exhibition in 1943. Almost the entire tenure of Konrad Nägeli in the city council was shaped by the consequences of both world wars as well as the embroidery crisis.
