Konrad Schmid (* 1476 in Küsnacht ; † October 11, 1531 in Kappel am Albis ) was a Swiss reformer and friend of Ulrich Zwingli .

Life

Born as the son of a wealthy farmer, Schmid received his Magister Artium from the University of Tübingen in 1505 . Then he joined the Johanniter Commandery Küsnacht . At the age of forty, he completed his theology studies at the University of Basel with a bachelor's degree in 1516 . After a brief activity as a people's priest in Seengen from 1517, he became Commander of the Johanniter Commandery Küsnacht in 1519 .

Access to the Reformation came through writings that Ulrich Zwingli, whose ardent campaigner he became, had conveyed to him. In 1522 Schmid was invited to the Museggumgang in Lucerne as a guest preacher , where he was able to spread his reformatory views outside Zurich for the first time. Schmid reacted to the resulting controversy with a first publication ( Brother Konrad Schmid's answer , 1522). As a participant in the 1st and 2nd Zurich Disputation in 1523, Schmid stood out for his level-headed votes for the veneration of saints and against iconoclasm . Later he was again active as a journalist in the fight against the Anabaptists (1527) and as a participant in the Bern disputation of 1528.

Schmid married in 1525. He died on October 11, 1531 at the side of his friend Zwingli in the battle of Kappel . Conrad Ferdinand Meyer thought of it in a fragment of a novel and in the poem Der Rappe des Komtur .
