The Conservative Party of Colombia ( Spanish Partido Conservador Colombiano ) is a political party in Colombia . It was founded in 1849 by Mariano Ospina Rodríguez and José Eusebio Caro . They prepared a manifesto they called the "Conservative Program of 1849" which appeared in the La Civilización newspaper.

Founding ideas and history

The manifesto included the basic ideology of conservatism, which was mainly inspired by the classical philosophers Plato and Aristotle , as well as Christian thinkers such as Augustine , Thomas Aquinas and Francisco Suarez . They were also influenced by the fathers of the emancipation of the North American colonies in 1776 and the French Revolution , particularly with regard to freedoms and human rights .

From 1858 to 2002, the Conservatives and the Liberal Party of Colombia alternately shared government power in Colombia. Before the fall of President Gustavo Rojas Pinilla , the Liberals and Conservatives founded the "National Front". Since then, both parties have been in competition with each other. In the 2010 presidential election , the Conservative Party was represented by Noemí Sanín .

In the 2014 parliamentary elections in Colombia , the party won 19 senatorial seats in the Colombian Senate and 27 seats in the Colombian House of Representatives .

In the parliamentary elections in Colombia in 2018 on March 11, 2018, the party won 14 senatorial seats in the Colombian Senate and 21 seats in the Colombian House of Representatives.
