Konstantin Apollonowitsch Sawizki ( Russian Константин Аполлонович Савицкий , scientific transliteration Konstantin Apollonovič Savickij ; born June 6, 1844 in Taganrog ; † February 13, 1905 in Penza ) was a Russian painter and teacher . His works can be assigned to realism and partly to impressionism in painting.

Life

He grew up as the son of a former military doctor who, after leaving the army, worked as a doctor at a high school in Taganrog. Here he spent his childhood and youth. He was interested in painting from a young age. His first drawings and sketches were made on the Azov Sea , where he spent the holidays with his parents. He received drawing lessons at high school. When he was in the fifth grade of high school, his parents died unexpectedly. Konstantin Sawizki then came to his uncle, a brother of his father, who lived in what is now Latvia and became his guardian.

Here he attended a private boarding school. In 1862 he completed his training here and went to Saint Petersburg to enter the local art academy . Personal acquaintance with outstanding representatives of Russian culture such as Ilya Repin , Iwan Iwanowitsch Schischkin , Viktor Michailowitsch Wasnezow , Mark Matwejewitsch Antokolski , Wassili Petrovich Stassow and Nikolai Michailowitsch Karamsin had a lasting influence on his further development.

Savitsky soon became one of the best students of the Petersburg Art Academy. Five of his pictures, which were created during his studies, were awarded silver medals, for the painting Cain and Abel (Каин и Авель) from 1871 he received a gold medal. After completing his studies, he went abroad for two years.

After returning to Russia, he became a partner in the Peredwischniki . His painting track work (Ремонтные работы на железной дороге) was one of the first works of this period, which were dedicated to the life of the working class. He was also involved in the creation of the painting Morgen im Kiefernwald , which he painted in collaboration with Iwan Schischkin. However, he later removed his signature from this painting, so that it is now attributed to Schischkin alone.

The names of his works such as Die Abgebrannten (Погорельцы), Awakening to War (На войну), The Shepherd (Пастух), Krutchnik (Крючник) and Dispute at the Barrier (Спор на меже) provide information about the intention of his art. A large part of his works is now in the galleries of Moscow , Saint Petersburg and Kiev .

For more than two decades, Zavitsky worked as a teacher in the art academies of Moscow, Saint Petersburg and Penza. In 1897 he became a member of the Petersburg Art Academy. His son Georgi, who was also to become a well-known painter, was one of his many students. Konstantin Sawizki died in 1905.
