Constantine V (Armenia)
Constantine V ( Armenian Կ ո ս տ անդին, translit. Gosdantin ; * April 17, 1313 , † December 21, 1362 ) was the second Latin king of Lesser Armenia from the Lusignan dynasty . He ruled from 1344 to 1362.
Constantine was the son of Marshal Baldwin von Neghir and Pertzerpert, a nephew of King Hethum I and Marie von Barbaron and a distant cousin of his predecessor, King Constantine IV.
After Constantine IV was killed during an uprising of the Armenian barons in 1344, he was succeeded by Constantine V, who immediately tried to get rid of all the other heir to the throne. The nephews of Constantine IV, Bohemond and Leon VI. , escaped to Cyprus before the murder commissioned by Constantine V could be carried out .
The Muslim Mamluks conquered the port of Ayas on May 23, 1347. In 1359 they took the cities of Adana and Tarsos and occupied the entire eastern part of the empire, the "flat Cilicia ". As a result, the kingdom was reduced to the western part, which is referred to as "rough Cilicia".
Constantine was the first husband of Marie of Armenia , the daughter of the Armenian regent of Lesser Armenia Oshin of Korykos and Johanna of Anjou, a daughter of the titular emperor of Constantinople , Philip I of Taranto .
Constantine V died of natural causes. He was succeeded by Constantine VI.
