Kopffick with level (own notation: head † ".DELTA.k with level ) is the seventh album by German rapper D-Bo . It was published on January 4, 2013, the music label Wolfpack Entertainment . After the lie of freedom and on the search for happiness is it was the third album D-Bos, which was released through his own record company.

background

After releasing his album The Lie of Freedom , D-Bo began planning head fuck with level . In the course of this, pieces were created which, according to D-Bo, " did not fit into the concept for 'head fuck with level' ". These were combined into a separate album. Since the album Kopffick mit Ebene originally had the working title Glück , D-Bo decided to name the album, published in 2011, In Search of Happiness . D-Bo later discarded the title luck because it was not meaningful enough. Another idea for the album title was D-Bo's real first name Danny . This was turned down as too boring. At the end of May 2012, the album was finally announced with the title Head Fuck with Level for October 5th, 2012. At the time of the announcement, the album was already planned, so that afterwards only the recording phase followed.

At the end of August 2012 the track list of the album as well as the guest rappers and singers were announced. A few weeks later it was announced that the release date of the album had to be postponed to January 4, 2013 due to legal problems. D-Bo did not give the exact reason, but pointed out that there was a risk that Kopffick would have to be taken off the market shortly after the release. The legal problem can be resolved by December. However, since the album should " not go under completely in the Christmas business ", the release date was set in January.

According to D-Bos, the album title “Head Fuck with Level” combines the two “ focal points ” of the release. In connection with the term "Kopffick" problems, topics from life and personal experiences of D-Bos are discussed. The pieces deal with conflicts, but each end with a positive message. According to D-Bo, the sophisticated side of the album is reflected in the arrangement and the lyrics. On the album cover, the title can be seen in its own spelling "head †" Δk with level ". D-Bo justified the spelling with the fact that the use of vulgar terms such as" fuck "on covers can lead to problems with the distribution of the album. According to D-Bo, owners of electronics stores refuse to include such products, so he decided to “cover up the title with symbols ”.

music

The album combines elements of different musical styles. Since his album The Lie of Freedom , D-Bo has increasingly oriented itself towards electronic music. According to his own statement, he also used electro and dubstep for high quality head fuck. In addition, the song Alone sein can be assigned to the genre of indie rock . However, hip-hop continues to form the " basis " of his music . Some pieces were recorded with an orchestra .

In an interview, D-Bo stated that he wanted to incorporate musical crossovers on his first albums . However, since he could not play acoustic instruments, as a producer was not talented enough for the implementation and had only known hip-hop producers in his environment, he could not implement his music according to his ideas. Max Mostley, who appears as the main producer on top level , understands D-Bo's musical goals and shares his taste. D-Bo understands high quality head fuck as the first album that represents a finished product. In contrast, his other publications are " unfinished albums ".

marketing

On August 10, 2012, Alone sein, the first single to Kopffick with level was released as a download. The video was released the day before the single. In addition to the album version of the piece, the single also contains the instrumental by Max Mostley and the a cappella version . The piece Durchzug was released as the second single on September 28, 2012. The album, instrumental and a cappella versions as well as the “Arctic Remix” and “Phil Serious Remix” by Durchzug are represented on the single, which is also only available as a download . A video for the song appeared parallel to the single release. On November 16, the song Dein Herz followed as the third single. Originally this should not appear until November 23, but was brought forward at short notice. The download single contains the album, instrumental and a cappella version as well as the "Phil Serious Remix" of the piece. Three days before the single was released, the corresponding video, in which a gay couple is in love , appeared exclusively on the news website Stern.de . Both the video for Durchzug and Dein Herz were filmed in New York City . In the case of a draft , according to D-Bos, for example, no major German city came into question. The text of the play deals with the narrator's escape from his environment into a daydream in which he works as a firefighter in the United States . The backdrop of New York serves to visualize the hectic pace.

In addition to the videos for the single releases, music videos for two other pieces were also released. At the end of 2011, a video for the remix by Raf Camora and Benno of the piece Flowers was released. In early September 2012 a video for the song Hotpants was released . As a further marketing element, five short teasers were shot. These were published between July 28 and August 8, 2012. A tour of D-Bo and Hardsoul announced for February 2013 was canceled one month in advance.

Kopffick with level reached the German album charts in 2013 with number 79 for one week .

criticism

The e-zine Laut.de rated Kopffick level with two out of a possible five points. In her review, the editor Dani Fromm praises the fact that D-Bo disregards trends. D-Bo treats “ interpersonal or recurring emotional states ” and breaks “ lance after lance for dream dancers. “The musician's courage to place the topic of a relationship in your heartin a gay context ”is positively emphasized. The productions of the songs, however, are miserable. The melodies are characterized by “ cheap synths, dusty wind effects and yesterday's disco rhythms ”. Furthermore, the D-Bos lecture was rated negatively. From Fromm's point of view, this is bumpy and uses " such simple rhyme structures that it borders on audacity ". In the text on Durchzug , in which the rapper fails to find a rhyme for “Ex”, the “ uptightness ” of D-Bos comes to light. This also applies to the cover of the album, on which the “ provocative word 'Kopffick' ” is eliminated with “ silly special characters ”.

In a review published on the Rap.de website, the album received two out of a possible ten points. The melodies are well produced and alternate between “ the genres of dubstep, drum and bass, techno and electronic music . "From the point of view of the editor Phil Weichert, however," monotony is the predominant basic feeling of the parts "of the rapper. Despite many years of activity as a rapper, D-Bo has no " sovereign flow. “In terms of content, Kopffick is criticized negatively with level . In the texts, “ hollow phrases […] meet constant repetition of individual words. “Aside from Max Mostley's contribution on the song Is Okay , the editor has praise for guest contributions from RAF 3.0, Emine Bahar and Max Mostley. The piece Dein Herz is one of the few high points, whereas Ist Okay delivers " both the content and the musical low point of the album ". In summary, D-Bo's album contains " 73 minutes of contentlessness " and the listener looks in vain for a real level.
