The Teufelsbad in Eilenriede, reconstructed in 1991

The Kopperloch in Hanover is a historic, sulfur-containing bathing spring . The location of the natural swimming pool , also popularly known as the Teufelsbad , which was rediscovered by chance, is the southern Eilenriede near the listed Heiligers-Brunnen .

history

In the vicinity of the Heiligers-Brunnen , the forest floor is often flooded, especially in spring

The Kopperloch (= " copper hole ") was developed as a bathing area as early as the 18th century, with a depth of around 40–60 cm, a length of 5.20 m and a width of 4 m. At the time, the bathroom was framed in an octagonal shape with oak planks made according to French foot measurements . Over the centuries, the near-natural bathing establishment fell into oblivion and deteriorated more and more until it was completely covered with earth.

In 1963, forest workers accidentally rediscovered the historic bathing establishment. After historians had examined the find, the natural bath, also known as the Devil's Bath, because of the sulfur smell, was reconstructed almost true to the original in 1991.
