The mountain range from the north |
The Korab ( Albanian Maja e Korabit , Macedonian Golem Korab ) is the highest peak of the Korab Mountains on the border between Albania and North Macedonia . The height of the main summit is not entirely clear. While Albanian springs consistently 2754 m above sea level. A. indicate an altitude of 2764 m applies on the north Macedonian side . i. J. .
The Korab is very rugged and consists mainly of slate and limestone from the Paleozoic Era with a scaly and block-like structure and of severely damaged gypsum from the Permo trias . On the west side the mountain drops steeply over cliffs. The north side also consists of jagged rocks. Forming a kind of double peak, another peak, called Korab II , with almost the same height, lies around 150 meters northwest of the Korab peak within Albanian territory . In the southeast, meadows pierced by a few ledges stretch to the summit, which is therefore quite easy to reach and is occasionally visited by shepherds with their flocks of sheep .
An ascent without a local guide or off the marked paths can be dangerous because of duds . The permit from the Ministry of the Interior, which was previously required for ascents from the North Macedonian side, is no longer necessary - mountaineers only have to show their passports at the border police stations in the border area. The standard route starts from the Radika River in Mavrovo National Park and is equipped with easily recognizable trail markings.
On the Albanian side, the village of Radomira is the starting point for ascents.
