Cornflower Blue is a Polish historical film from 1989. Directed by Leszek Wosiewicz , who alsowrotethe script together with Jarosław Sander . The film tells the story of a musician in Auschwitz concentration camp . It was based on a book by Kazimierz Tymiński , who himself survived Auschwitz. Cornflower Blue was entered by Poland in the running for the Oscar for the best foreign language film at the 1990 Academy Awards , but was not considered for the final selection.

In Auschwitz concentration camp there is a block leader nicknamed Kornblaumenblau , who forces musicians to play his favorite music, including the song called Kornblumenblau . When Tadeusz Wyczynski arrives as a new inmate in the camp, he is said to be used for forced labor. However, his musical talent is quickly noticed, which is why he climbs up the warehouse hierarchy and works first as a musician, then as a waiter. The block leader's wife saved him from death with her intercession. When the Red Army liberated Auschwitz, he played the song Kalinka for them .

Cornflower Blue's production company was Studio Filmowe im. Karola Irzykowskiego . The film premiered in Poland on October 9, 1989. In November 1990 it was screened in Denmark as part of a Polish Film Week . In Poland the film was interpreted as a parable on the situation of artists under the conditions of a totalitarian state.

At the 1990 Polish Film Awards , Kornblumenblau won two prizes: on the one hand, Leszek Wosiewicz was awarded for directing, and on the other, Wanda Zeman and Jarosław Wołejko for editing. In 1989 the film was shown in competition at the Locarno International Film Festival . Adam Kamień was awarded the bronze leopard for his acting performance.
