Koster is a city in the South African province of Northwest ( Northwest ). It is the administrative seat of the municipality of Kgetlengrivier in the Bojanala Platinum district .

geography

In 2011 Koster had 2342 inhabitants, together with the township Reagile to the north, 19,499 inhabitants. The city is 58 kilometers southwest of Rustenburg and 72 kilometers west-northwest of Magaliesburg . The place is on the watershed between Orange and Limpopo .

history

Koster was founded in 1913 on the site of the Kleinfontein farm . The origin of the name is unclear. The place was named after Bastiaan Koster, the original owner of the farm, or after Herman Jacob Koster, former chief prosecutor of the South African Republic , or after the land surveyor at the time .

Economy and Transport

Agriculture is the main activity around Koster. The Koster Hospital is in Koster .

Koster is on the R52 trunk road , which runs from Rustenburg to Lichtenburg in the southwest, and the R509, which connects Swartruggens with Magaliesburg in the northwest.

Koster owns a train station on the Johannesburg - Mahikeng line , which is served by freight traffic. The railway line runs in the Koster area along the R509.
