The Aboño Power Plant ( Spanish Central térmica de Aboño ) is a coal-fired power plant in the municipality of Carreño , Autonomous Community of Asturias , Spain . The city of Gijón is about 8 km east of the power station.
The installed capacity of the power plant is 921.7 MW . It is owned by EDP and operated by EDP. The power plant went into operation on March 15, 1974 with the first unit.
Power plant units
The power plant consists of two units that went into operation in 1974 and 1985. The following table gives an overview:
block | Max. Power (MW) | Start of operation | turbine | generator | Steam boiler |
---|---|---|---|---|---|
1 | 365.5 | 1974 | BBC | BBC | Foster Wheeler |
2 | 556.2 | 1985 | BBC | BBC | Foster Wheeler |
The net output of Unit 1 is 341.79 MW, that of Unit 2 is 535.87 MW. The annual production in 2005 was 7.221 billion kWh . Unit 1 is to be operated entirely with steel mill gas and natural gas from 2022 in order to avoid closure. The steel mill gas is supplied from the nearby ArcelorMittal steelworks in Gijón. Block 2 should only be kept as a reserve.
